CLORINDA

PT

“It’s Clorinda! Clorinda, with a C!” That was always how she replied when people asked her name. There is a city in Argentina, a bleach brand in Chile, and a warrior in an epic by Torquato Tasso bearing the same name. And there is this Clorinda: born in Lisbon, on Avenida da República, married to Helder, mother of Pedro.

She arrived in Luanda when so many were leaving, and lived there for the following decade. She left brief, enigmatic notes in simple diaries, while her story became intertwined with that of a country — or of two — at a time when great powers turned Africa into their arena.

In July 1991, our paths crossed. I met her son, with whom I would go on to share my life. From Clorinda I learned to laugh at myself, to turn conflict into lightness. She did not have problems; she had challenges. She always navigated them with a smile, as though victory were hers, even in the hardest moments.

She lost only on 7 October 2004. She lost, and we lost with her.

Here is Clorinda. Restored to an existence.
The one you choose to give her.
