One autumn, during a walk, I came across the ruins of Vilarinho da Furna by chance. The drought that year had caused the waters to recede, revealing forgotten houses and streets, as though they were emerging from a long sleep.
Until then, I had known only the name of the village. Driven by curiosity, I sought to discover who had lived there and what stories inhabited those stones. I met former residents who shared memories of a simple, communal life that had been submerged along with the village. For some, the change brought new opportunities; for others, it meant the irreparable loss of a home. In every story, nothing remained as it had been.
The photographs of these ruins are more than records of a place that occasionally rises from the water. They are a way of preserving the memory of a community and of making visible a past that might otherwise remain forgotten.
This book is a tribute to the former inhabitants of Vilarinho da Furna and to their resilience, underscoring the importance of safeguarding cultural memories before time submerges them once again.
